Dragon Quest FM

This week, Austin is joined by his good friend William of The Good Times Boys to discuss horror games, movies, and other media just in time for Halloween.

This week, Austin is talking about the upcoming volume 5 of the Mark of Erdrick manga and the Withered World demo, as well as answering some listener questions on green slimes and why the series was initially called Dragon Warrior in the United States.

This week, Cody from Popagenda is sitting down with Austin to discuss the release of TOEM 2. It might just be Austin's favorite game of the year, and it's definitely one you should check out.

This week, Austin and Plattym3 are talking about Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD-, which they both played on the Switch and Switch 2. We died, we laughed, we died, we cried, we died some more. Oh, and then we died again.

This week, Austin is catching up with games he's played recently, including Orbitals (amazing), Marvel's Wolverine (it's okay), and Torneko's Mystery Dungeon (he's died a lot).

This week, Austin is flying solo to talk about all that Dragon Quest Monters: The Withered World news we've gotten this past week, including the new characters, villain, worlds, and gameplay mechanics. He also discusses the new Dragon Quest board game, which will hopefully release outside of Japan one of these days.

This week, Austin is hanging out with Plattym3 from the Slime Time podcast to chat about our favorite Dragon Quest Monsters games. Plus, which entries we didn't love as much, which one we'd recommend for beginners, and a whole lot more!

This week, Austin is chatting with our good friend Chris about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. From Navi to the Water Temple to the Swordless Link trick, we take a little stroll down memory lane in Hyrule.

Sony made the bone-head play recently of discontinuing physical disc production of video games starting in January 2028. So next year is the last year we may have physical DQ games. Especially with Square Enix only using Game Key Cards on the Switch 2. We have thoughts.

This week we're talking about Books! We announce the winners of our Mark of Erdrick vol 4 giveaway, as well as discuss the manga itself (no spoilers). We also get into the Delicious Quest unofficial DQ cookbook, which is available for preorder and drops June 30 online. You can also hear us talk about goodies from the High Republic, the Saga graphic novel, Wheel of Time and more. We knew where this episode was going to start, but it went somewhere different, and that's okay. It was fun and got to rep some community members and their awesome projects. https://vidramon.bigcartel.com/product/delicious-quest-unofficial-dq-erdrick-trilogy-cookbook

We were there, in the before time, in the long, long ago. We were there when the secrets were unfurled a mote at a time in print-run magazines, CD roms, and demo discs that came with fighting games. Come, children, and gather round for the elders to tell you of what it was like when the Chosen One was preparing for launch and what came once it was birthed into the world.

There was a Nintendo Direct this week, and we got to see more of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World! We had gameplay, some new reveals, and more. We talk all about that and other amazing games that we're genuinely excited for in this week's episode.

This week, we talk about Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World. We have been excited about this one ever since it was announced, and Beej was excited even before that--having called it as being a part of the 40th Anniversary stream in an episode a few weeks back. We don't know a lot of info about the game yet, but there is a pretty good amount we can read between the lines from the teaser, seeing Bianca and Nera, as well as previous installments in the Monsters series. Are you as excited as we are for this one? Also, we have a shoutout to our friend Ryan Molina for the physical release of his PS4 game, Popcorn Rocket. It's available on Amazon, digital across various platforms, and you can read about it when he talks about its production on Substack. We are also doing a giveaway for Book 4 of the new DQ Erdrick manga, so if you want a chance to win that, just comment on this post. We'll be giving one away to Patrons and one to the general public (and maybe more, depending on our moods! haha)

It's Dragon Quest Day, and like we had hoped, Dragon Quest XII was revealed, and we got our first look at the next mainline installment of our favorite series. Here's what to expect from our reactions and commentary: Title change. No longer Flames of Fate. Beyond Dreams instead. Completely started over from scratch. Protag design Character designs No release date, so see you in 2030 New Monsters game with Bianca and Nera, coming out before DQ12 but no date yet. On all current platforms.

In this episode, we talk about what might be Austin's game of the year. Yeah, already. This early. Apparently, LEGO Batman is just that good. We reminisce about Arkham games and Spider-man, as well as other LEGO games and how this newest installment really takes the best of all of them and puts them in a pretty amazing package.

This week, we dig deep into some of the best DQ games that aren't available for console. Whether it's tactics games, rails combat, or TCG battlers, there's something here for everyone. Unless they cancel it while you're still enjoying it, which is more than likely what will happen.

This year is the 40th anniversary of Dragon Quest, and we are talking about what we hope to see and what we expect to see during the Dragon Quest Day presentations in May. We're hoping for DQ12, like every fan in the world, but what else do we think will pop up for the anniversary? Let us know what you expect and hope to see, too!

Let's go back. Way back. Back to the very beginning. Well, not THE beginning, but pretty close. Super Mario Bros was one of the very first games either of us played, and it was fundamental in shaping who we were (are) as people. For real.

We go through the history of Pokemon Red & Blue, from our perspectives as we experienced it when the games were new. This is a new subseries of episodes we're going to be doing regularly, going over the games that made a difference to you--and us--over the years.

This week, we're playing a game. Austin has put together a great list of true/false questions about Dragon Quest (and about us IRL) to see if BJ knows which are true and which are false. Many laughs and much fun ensues. Play along and see if you can beat the Questy Boys at their own game! There are rumors abound that a Zenithia Trilogy (DQ 4, 5, 6) is in the works, so we have a listener request to do an episode about what we'd like to see in the new games. Do we want full 3d like DQ7 Reimagined or HD-2D like the recent Erdrick Trilogy? What other things should change or get added in? Let us know in the comments!

Austin did a review of Monster Hunter Stories 3 for work (that you can read below), and he also had to gush about how great it is on the podcast. Since you all love turn-based RPGs, this one is right up your alley. Austin even says it's his favorite monster taming RPG at this point, and that's saying a lot. Today, we're talking about various character elements in the DQ7R, such as when Aishe and Mervin come in, as well as vocations and how leveling them up in the new version changes the pacing of the entire game. If you're interested in winning a 4-day PAX East pass, click here: https://gleam.io/OnmoW/pax-east-giveaway And if you're up for checking out the Kickstarter Beej is a part of and writing the hardcover campaign for, here's the link for that: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/diceheads/storm-of-the-shadow-realm-an-animal-adventure-rpg?ref=7605v1

Last week we talked about the cool stuff coming out for Dragon Quest in 2026, and this week we're discussing all of the other cool games that we think you'll want to check out over the course of the year. If you're interested in entering the PAX East giveaway, you can follow this link to enter: https://gleam.io/OnmoW/pax-east-giveaway

So what's coming this year? Do we get DQ12 finally? Even a demo? What about a Zenithian trilogy? It's the 40th anniversary of Dragon Quest, so we're due for something. But what?!

Austin kicks off this episode of Dragon Quest FM by unboxing the Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Collector’s Edition live on air, finally cracking open a box that’s been taunting him in his office for over a day. We walk through each item—the slime plushie, PS5 physical copy, slime steelbook, and the wonderfully elaborate ship-in-a-bottle display. Austin's dog Olive is terrified of bubble wrap, and we tangent into downloading Final Fantasy XIV on a PS3 in BJ's office because of sketchy rural internet. From there, the conversation shifts into BJ’s early impressions of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined on Switch 2, including his frustration with game key cards on unreliable internet (which triggered the tangent), using “easy mode” boosts to XP and vocation points unashamedly, and enjoying Maribel’s alternate “day off” outfit unlocked via the demo save transfer. Austin vents about some pacing issues, arguing that some of the remake’s “streamlining” still leaves tedious sequences intact.

Austin was able to play Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined early and he's here with a review for us! We talk about what's good, what could be better, and what was surprising about playing through his third version of DQ7. Beej's copy of the game should arrive soon, so we'll dive deeper as he gets to play it and see more of the game. https://patreon.com/dragonquestfm https://youtube.com/@dqfm https://bsky.app/profile/dragonquest.fm https://twitter.com/dragonquestfm

The DQ7 Reimagined Demo has been out for a few weeks, and we haven't had a chance to cover it because of sickness! So now we can, and boy do we have opinions. From Switch, Switch 2, to PS5, let's talk about which of the Dragon Quest VII Reimagined demo versions is best, and what we think about the game so far. https://youtube.com/@dqfm https://twitter.com/dragonquestfm https://patreon.com/dragonquestfm https://bsky.app/profiles/dragonquest.fm

Well, that's a wrap. Season 7 is over, and we're moving into Season 8 nextg week. But as for now, let's talk about video games. We did our first Best of 2025 episode a couple of weeks ago and never even got to video games. And we're a video games podcast! So here we are fixing that, talking about all the games that we think are worth talking about this year (unless we forgot something we played, which is also entirely possible). Austin gave some really good indie suggestions at the end, too, that you should totally pick up.Check out our YouTube channel at https://youtube.com/@dqfm, and our Patreon at https://patreon.com/dragonquestfm

This week, we're going over the second book in the Mark of Erdrick manga series, published by Square Enix Books & Manga. We're really thankful to them for sending over advance copies for us to read and talk about. We do a mostly spoiler-free discussion of book 2, and it's a fantastic book to read. It's out today, and you can purchase it at the link below! Don't miss our other episode where we discuss the production of the series with editor Jennifer Sherman, just a few episodes back. Thanks a bunch, and we hope you love the book as much as we do! https://amzn.to/4qq8mAF

This was supposed to be a catch-all episode of the podcast, but it turns out that we're not very short-winded. We talk about books, movies, and TV in this part of our Best Of 2025 shows.

This week, Beej has been able to play DQ2 in the HD-2D Remake, and as you'd expect, he has thoughts. He might have had some trouble with autosave and losing progress, but that doesn't stop him from loving the game and seeing how it's a fantastic addition to the DQ series. https://dragonquest.fm https://bsky.app/profile/dragonquest.fm https://x.com/dragonquestfm https://youtube.com/@dqfm https://patreon.com/dragonquestfm

It's more about the DQ2 HD-2D Remake post-game, with superbosses, Mal, and what might be the most frustrating thing Austin's played since the original Rendarak. Even Beej got to finally dig in on the DQ2 remake and see what all the fuss is about (and it's awesome!). https://dragonquest.fm https://bsky.app/profile/dragonquest.fm https://x.com/dragonquestfm https://youtube.com/@dqfm https://patreon.com/dragonquestfm

This week we talk about he DQ2 HD-2D Remake's post game, though not every bit of it because Square Enix still has a moratorium they've asked to be honored. There are a lot of cool things going on, and Austin says that the final boss doesn't have as much finality as you'd expect. So what waits you after the credits roll? You'll just have to listen to find out! https://dragonquest.fm https://bsky.app/profile/dragonquest.fm https://x.com/dragonquestfm https://youtube.com/@dqfm https://patreon.com/dragonquestfm

Austin spent a lot of time with the HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest 2, and it's by far the better adaptation in the new collection. Hear what he has to say about the new scenarios and character, and why the Prince of Cannock might not be quite as bad as he used to be. Also, Beej forgot to ask him about the kitty cat suit, and he feels terrible. Next time! https://dragonquest.fm https://bsky.app/profile/dragonquest.fm https://x.com/dragonquestfm https://youtube.com/@dqfm https://patreon.com/dragonquestfm

Austin and Beej talk about good and the bad that come with DRAGON QUEST 1 HD-2D Remake, from the absurdly high difficulty at times (or should Austin just GIT GUD?) to the new content that ties all three entries of the Erdrick trilogy together. There's a lot of good in the game, but is it the strongest link in the new remake trilogy, or the weakest? Or the middle?! Listen to find out! https://dragonquest.fm https://bsky.app/profile/dragonquest.fm https://x.com/dragonquestfm https://youtube.com/@dqfm https://patreon.com/dragonquestfm

This week, the title says it all. Austin has played and beaten both games in the newest DQ HD-2D collection, and since it's out TODAY, you can listen to this, see what he thinks about it, and then go out and buy it for yourself! Enjoy! https://patreon.com/dragonquestfm https://x.com/dragonquestfm https://bsky.app/profile/dragonquest.fm https://youtube.com/@dqfm

This week, Austin talks about his experience with Pokémon Legends ZA and meeting our good friend Platty from the Slime Time podcast IRL! Pokémon has a hold on Austin, and he plays every game that comes out. So how does Legends ZA stand up to some of the lesser-loved ones like Scarlet/Violet? You gotta listen to find out! Or read his full review at ScreenRant here: https://screenrant.com/pokemon-legends-z-a-review/ https://dragonquest.fm https://x.com/dragonquestfm https://bsky.app/profile/dragonquest.fm https://youtube.com/@dqfm https://patreon.com/dragonquestfm

The beta test for the new Dragon Quest mobile game is live--and neither of us got in! It's a tragedy of epic proportions! We talk about that, why Austin never had a chance to get in, and what some of our friends are saying about the beta since they were loved and got in! https://patreon.com/dragonquestfm https://bsky.app/profile/dragonquest.fm https://x.com/dragonquestfm https://dragonquest.fm

This week, the Questy Boys (no mystery this time, though!) discuss the content that has been added to the new version of Dragon Quest 7, as well as the content that's been officially announced as being cut. Join the conversation and let us know what you think about the additions and subtractions in the comments! https://patreon.com/dragonquestfm https://bsky.app/profile/dragonquest.fm https://x.com/dragonquestfm https://dragonquest.fm

We have so much to talk about! Dragon Quest VII Reimagined was announced, we have new info on DQ 1 + 2 HD-2D Remake, and there's a new mobile game called Smash/Grow coming out! It's a great time to be a Dragon Quest fan, so come nerd out with us! Austin also promises to eat his Treebeard action figure. But why? Gotta listen to find out! https://youtube.com/@dqfm https://bsky.app/profile/dragonquest.fm https://twitter.com/dragonquestfm https://dragonquest.fm

On September 25th, the Dragon Quest manga, The Mark of Erdrick (known as Emblem of Roto in Japan), will release in English for the very first time. With us in this episode is Jennifer Sherman, the localization editor for the series, and we talk about the history of DQ manga, she gives us a preview of the new book, and what it takes to localize and translate something like a 15-volume series like The Mark of Erdrick. Austin also mentions a previous translator interview he did with Nob Ogasawara, and you can find that at the following link: https://geektogeekmedia.com/geekery/dragonquestaustin/dragon-quest-translation-localization-interview-with-nob-ogasawara/ You can pre-order The Mark of Erdrick now at https://amzn.to/41TEpza Don't miss Jennifer on Twitter and Bluesky as https://x.com/jaasherman and https://bsky.app/profile/jaasherman.bsky.social You can find us at https://bsky.app/profile/dragonquest.fm and https://x.com/dragonquestfm, as well as https://patreon.com/dragonquestfm

Like you, we're always waiting on the next few tidbits from Square Enix about the upcoming HD-2D remakes of Dragon Quest 1 and 2. And now we have some! From news about what we can expect from the Princess of Cannock to a new system of Sigils being introduced into DQ1 all the way to a new type of item we've never had in DQ before: scrolls! It's a ton of fun this week as we go through the announcements and what they might mean for the upcoming release. https://patreon.com/dragonquestfm https://bsky.app/profile/dragonquest.fm https://youtube.com/@dqfm

It's Dragon Quest 7's 25th birthday, and we talk about all the great things about it, the bad things about it, and look at some of the cool merch Austin has that you might have never seen. BJ sure hadn't! https://youtube.com/@dqfm https://bsky.app/profile/dragonquest.fm https://twitter.com/dragonquestfm

DQ has some wonderful characters, and this week, we talk about which ones would be the most fun to spend an evening out on the town. You definitely see Austin and BJ's personalities come out in their choices, too. It's a fantastic, silly discussion, and we want to know from you, too: which DQ character do you want to have a beer with? https://bsky.app/profile/dragonquest.fm https://youtube.com/@dqfm https://patreon.com/dragonquestfm

This week, the guys are playing catch(up) as Austin recounts his recent trip to Seattle. It's a non-DQ episode, but it's so much fun you'll want to swing for the fences anyway. https://youtube.com/@dqfm https://patreon.com/dragonquestfm https://twitter.com/dragonquestfm https://bsky.app/profile/dragonquest.fm

Beej went to Gen Con and had one of the best professional gaming experiences of his life. You have to hear about this trip! So much gaming goodness! https://bsky.app/profile/dragonquest.fm https://youtube.com/@dqfm https://twitter.com/dragonquestfm https://dragonquest.fm

Today, we discuss one of the most common questions we get asked from listeners: do we think DQ12 will be open world and what our thoughts on it are.

This week, we're talking all about the new leak and rumor that there's going to be a Dragon Quest 7 remake. But didn't we just get a DQ7 remake on the 3ds?! What's going on? We have a good discussion, and we want to know your opinions on the leak, too.

This week, we talk about everything that made us love DQ in the first place. It's a trip down memory lane with Beej and Austin, and you may hear about some new games that make you want to pick them up, which is a win-win!
